In today’s newsletter we will dive deeper into the concepts of copywriting and what are the strategies that you can learn from the billionaire copywriter in the history of all times - Gary Halbert .
Gary Halbert is perhaps the G.O.A.T. of copywriting. His legendary sales letters generated over $1,000,000,000 in revenue.
He’s had more multi-million dollar winning campaigns in different niches than any other copywriter — living or dead. And his copywriting book the Boron Letters happens to be one of the best books ever written on the topic.
So, without further ado, here are the top copywriting lessons that we can all glean from Gary Halbert:
Set up a proper writing space :
Gary was a big fan of writing . He could write anywhere with ease and passively.
Whether it’s
A desk
Local bar
Book store
Coffee shop
The location didn’t matter to him.
His idea was to sit down and write at whatever place he was admitted into .
But he made sure to stick with the same one for long stretches.
The goal was to signal to his brain that "it's time to write."
Always start with your mindset :
This is the biggest teaching from the legendary copywriter - Gary Halbert . You should always start with the right Mindset .
In the Boron Letters, he gives the following advice to his son Bond,
“Everyone wants to climb the mountain, but the big difference between those at the top and those still on the bottom is simply a matter of showing up tomorrow to give it just one more shot.”
I think that it’s correct at every point that - If we don’t strive to fix our fundamentals , then it doesn’t matter how much tactics and metrics we apply to improve our daily writing .
Try to get better at maintaining good fundamentals.
Set up a writing routine :
You should set up a writing routine and must stick to it every waking time of your day.
I write when I’m inspired, so I see to it I’m inspired every morning at nine o’clock.” ~ Peter De Vries
Time is the first thing you need to write well.
Find any sacred hours to write well and make a habit for it . Then ideas will follow like the river flows. You’ll see that in your sacred hours when you begin writing , new ideas and concepts keep on bombarding your head and will make you habitual in writing .
Great writers don’t find time to write , they make time to write.
Find a Starving Audience :
You must always find the market first ,....and then start selling your products .
Most of the people stuck at this point , that they manufacture their product first and then immediately start selling it without actually finding their right audience . They write amazing copy and market their product masterfully, yet they still can’t convince readers. There’s simply no demand for what they’re selling.
Instead , we should find a striving and hungry market and then supply/sell the required products . It is the best strategy to boost your scale.
Write a Lot :
Gary says that there are no shortcuts in life . And he is right .
We should write a lot . The more you write, and the more often you write, the better you will become.
Because no one has 100 bad pieces of writing.
They either have 10 and quit, or do it long enough to figure it out.
Garry was big at writing in the morning:
Gary used to write a lot in the morning to maintain the habit of conceptual writing routine.
Before going to bed, he would scribble down notes on four questions:
• What's the big idea here?
• What's my product's biggest benefit?
• What's most exciting about this product?
• What emotion am I trying to create?
Then, he went to bed and let his subconscious do the work for him.
Like clockwork, he would wake up with a clear answer to each question.
And then, time and time again, he would write a legendary sales letter that would generate millions in revenue.
Write for set time periods :
Gary was big on the Pomodoro technique.
He set a timer for 33:33.
And his rule was simple: he could do anything he wanted during that 33:33.Except get out of his chair. And this took the pressure off writing.
Most times he'd stare at the wall for the first few minutes. Sip his coffee. Think about how many other things he'd rather be doing.
But then, someway or another, he'd start writing.
And the timer let him know the torture would end soon.
Write something easy first :
Gary says that writing something easy first gives a head-start of possessiveness and consistency. When you write something easy , more ideas and concepts keep on popping up inside your head .
He had a go-to list of great sales letters he would copy word for word to get warmed up.
I didn't believe this would work at first.
But it's now my go-to way to get the juices flowing.
Draft fast Edit slow :
When writing, rip out your backspace button.
When editing, put it back and rip out everything else.
Every piece of great writing started as a crappy piece of writing.
So just get started.
Follow A.I.D.A method :
When Gary Halbert outlines his writing techniques, he never diverts aways from the A.I.D.A. formula. As a tried and tested structure, it forms the foundation of almost every top-performing sales letter ever written.
Here’s what it stands for:
Attention: An attention-grabbing headline that makes a promise to readers.
Interest: A hook that expands on your headline promise — it adds clarity.
Desire: Product benefits that entice your reader to buy.
Action: An irresistible offer that convinces them to buy now.
If you stick to this formula and apply it correctly, you can’t go far wrong with your copywriting skills .
One Tweet :
In this tweet , naval taught us the reason to live freely and be happy like children are always .
Why do children are more happier and we , in our adulthood , are not as happy as them .
We do not reside in the moment as they are , we do not live happier as they do , we are abide by our own goals , but children don’t . That’s why they are happy.
